I started volunteering at The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) in the spring of 2019. It was last year when I first learned about the volunteer opportunities at TGHC through a good friend. She said nothing but great things about TGHC which is why I decided to join. I am very fortunate to be part of Curiato Research Project as a volunteer. TGHC and Curiato Inc. is working on research which involves the use of advanced medical technologies, “smart bedsheet” and data science, to prevent pressure injuries among patients. I initially joined the volunteer program to simply have hands-on experience in a health care facility, but I am overjoyed to do something that I want to pursue in the future – research, and to be part of a project that can help health care providers improve wound care management.

The tasks seem intimidating at first, but the Curiato Project Team diligently trained us despite their busy schedule. They ensured that we understood the research project as well as our significant roles and tasks. Everyone involved in the project is very accommodating which makes my tasks easier to do. Aside from gaining research experience, what I like most about my involvement at THGC is the opportunity to meet new people. We had the opportunity to meet the young bright minds behind Curiato Inc., and for an aspiring future researcher like myself, I find their work in preventive medical technologies very inspiring. I will never forget my time here knowing that my contributions in the research project can potentially help in transforming the future of patient care, and I will encourage other people to join TGHC’s volunteer program.
