“I learned about The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) in 2001 from a bulletin at St. Basil’s Church where I sometimes go, and have been a Palliative Care volunteer ever since.
Toronto Grace has always been very supportive. The nurses and other staff are very professional and appreciative of the time I give. Volunteering a few hours per week also distracts me from my own petty problems and complaints by making me think about others who are going through very challenging times in their lives.
There have been so many inspiring moments I cannot single one out. Contrary to the popular notion – that being with palliative care patients must be depressing – it is in fact very inspiring. I see first hand how illness brings families together to support their loved ones. I see spouses spending their whole day at their partner’s bedside; children and grandchildren taking breaks from busy lives to come visit and sometimes they even visit daily.
I also learn about humility, kindness, gratitude and appreciation by interacting with the patients. I am always humbled by their kindness and gratitude for the small things I do.”
