“Over the last few years, two close relatives of mine have experienced complex continuing care and long-term care. In both cases, I have noticed the positive influence of social interactions on their paths to recovery. Fortunately, my large family guarantees at least one weekly visitation for each, but other patients aren’t as lucky. Witnessing how relationships are a vital source of healing, I was inspired to bridge this gap within my wider community through volunteering.

I came across The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre’s (TGHC) Volunteer Program. TGHC’s values resonated with my own and its atmosphere is welcoming. And so, when offered a volunteer placement in June 2019, I was more than delighted to accept.

Arts at the Grace has been a magnificent way to engage Complex Continuing Care and Palliative Care patients. It has not only provided a therapeutic outlet, but also serves as a foundation to forge deep personal connections. Patients have shared intimate details about their lives, ranging from their diagnoses, heartbreaks, travels, and ambitions. Their life courses have left me in awe. Although they are the ones thanking me every time, the truth is, I am grateful.

They have demonstrated what it means to persevere and remain optimistic when faced with difficulties. I hope that as I continue to volunteer at TGHC, I will contribute to strengthening their resilience and personal empowerment. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the TGHC community and I look forward to future possibilities as an Art Program Volunteer.”
