Vanessa Ma, Volunteer

“I have been a part of The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) family for a year and a half, and originally started as part of the Volunteer Resources Department. As I entered the first few weeks I was hesitant, worried about my lack of administrative skills prior to this position. Gradually everything became familiar, and each week became better than the last. Doing my regular administrative tasks became a peaceful part of my week and I found myself looking forward to my shifts and seeing my fellow volunteers. While working in the department, I participated in Volunteer Appreciation Week, and slowly as I began also doing introduction/orientation sessions for volunteers I became acquainted with all of the wonderful volunteers.

After months in the Volunteer Resources Department, I took on the Therapeutic Recreation Program as a second shift. There, I worked closely with the patients and started to understand why many of the patients loved the program. I worked exclusively during the baking sessions, and while the baking was fairly fun and straightforward, the magical part was when everyone would sit together after to eat the products and share their favourite recipes and memories. Stories of holiday seasons and birthdays were shared along with family secrets since everyone was certain they made the best cookies. In all this time of volunteering, the guests of these baking sessions would change but the atmosphere has never changed, and this lighthearted open culture has been a pleasure to work in.

I have since switched to volunteering in Information Systems Department, but with each department I create fond memories that help me understand why I am here.”

Vanessa continues to volunteer at the hospital but is now also on casual staff in the Weston Family Welcome Centre.  Congratulations Vanessa and thank you for your hard work and support!
