Michael is currently recovering from a stroke in our post acute care rehabilitation unit. He was referred to the music therapy program to address his difficulties with sustained attention, breathing, and speech volume and fluency. As well as receiving speech therapy, Michael has received neurologic music therapy to help him reach his communication goals. Over four weeks of therapy, Michael experienced a noticeable increase in vocal volume and attention span.

Music therapy has also offered Michael a chance to experience joy and the opportunity to just be a person during this rehabilitation. A faviourite part of his sessions occurs at the end, when he joins with others to sing songs together. Michael and his wife will hold each other’s hands and sing songs like “Isn’t She Lovely” and “When I Fall in Love.”
