I began volunteering at The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) in the summer of 2017. I play the piano during chapel service accompanying the Chaplains, and on the Palliative Care Unit. Prior to coming to TGHC, I performed for audiences as a classical musician. However, my experiences here have been unlike any other. The staff are friendly and passionate, and the patients and their families are always appreciative. It is rewarding to see how much comfort and joy music brings to the patients and their families.

I especially enjoy when patients or their families request to hear songs that have special meaning in their lives. My favorite moment was when a patient’s spouse requested “The Power of Love,” a song that was played at their wedding ceremony. As they sang along I could see that it brought back many memories for them. Some patients also request music by specific composers, like Tchaikovsky or Chopin, saying it reminded them of their home countries. I am so grateful that patients are willing to share their unique individual experiences with me, and I hope to continue to build many more connections through music.
